| More accurately, according to a conversation I had with Ms. Garrett the one time I met her, she confirmed that she had been offered the role but on the condition that she sign a seven year contract with MGM. Seven years was a standard term length but those contracts could be extended for various reasons and came with a lot of studio control. She didn't want to do that so she passed (I have seen a photo of her in makeup for a test). She added that had she known what the looming HUAC blacklist would do to her husband Larry Park's career (basically destroy it), she would have signed. The 1950s were very rough years for the couple. |
