I was a big fan of his Oscar-winning version of ''Chicago,'' with a screenplay by Bill Condon. But I wondered why they changed Mary Sunshine, so she'd be played by a woman instead: Christine Baranski. Online, it says Marshall and Condon felt a drag queen wouldn't fit in a realistic portrayal of 1920s Chicago. But ''Chicago'' was framed as a musical fantasy through Roxie's eyes. Also, the songs in ''Chicago'' were tributes to actual vaudeville acts. I assumed Mary Sunshine was a salute to Julian Eltinge, the famed vaudeville star. He sang and danced in female roles and then at the conclusion of his performance, removed his wig and revealed he was a man, much to the surprise of his unsuspecting audiences.
