For what it's worth, Kander did the dance arrangements and was the rehearsal pianist for ''Gypsy.''
When Sondheim put out ''Finishing the Hat,'' his collection of lyrics, he included insightful essays on legendary lyricists. Some were warm and admiring (Frank Loesser, Oscar Hammerstein, Cole Porter), and some were candid and quite critical (Lorenz Hart, Ira Gershwin, Noel Coward).
Sondheim avoided critiquing his contemporaries, ostensibly because they included his friends and didn't want to step on any toes. But I kinda wish he wrote a chapter to be published after his passing. I'd love to hear his thoughts on Kander & Ebb, Jerry Herman, Rice & Lloyd Webber, Schwartz ... |
