I recall reading about that. I'd be very curious to hear from anyone who attended that workshop. Audra is, of course, supremely talented, but that casting always seemed off to me. I know that she's defied expectations before (most famously in Lady Day), but that was a brilliant act of mimicry. Without doing an outright imitation like that, I don't think I can see Audra displaying the kind of glamour and, at times, archness that Aurora requires. And, I think it would have been a shame to have an Aurora who "moves well" as opposed to a true dancer. If the film is a success, it will be interesting to see if it prompts interest in a revival. I agree with others, though, who say that if a revival ever happens it has to feature a leading lady with undeniable star quality. Someone like that who is a true triple threat and also enough of a name to sell tickets..? That's probably a short list. |
