I suspect singers have been holding long notes since forever; it's impressive and showoffy, and that kind of breath control wows the crowd.

I love how Nicole holds ''hoooooooooome'' so long (like 8 seconds); her Norma is grand and larger-than-life and emphasizing her return ''at last.''

But my favorite long-held note in Broadway musicals comes from ''We Both Reached for the Gun'' in ''Chicago.'' Jerry Orbach didn't do this in the original 1975 production, but in the 1996 revival, James Naughton would hold the penultimate word, ''the,'' for about 12 seconds. Logically, it makes no sense to emphasize an article like ''the,'' but Billy Flynn is a showoff. And I've seen other Billys, like Christopher Sieber and Brent Barrett, hold it even longer.
