I am confused by your basic premise. You are a bit of a production nerd yet you admittedly didn't see the original musical...and haven't seen any of the other nominated Best Actress performances....and you are making huge generalizations about casting and the production design without researching why those decisions are made....I think Chu made close to the best possible screen version of Wicked. And audiences are responding. I've seen it twice in theaters and I witnessed friends coming together, enjoying the film, applauding after most musical numbers...crowds in the lobby afterward with people discussing the movie and their favorite moments---there are plenty of videos on Youtube where Chu discusses his filmmaking process. As a self-professed 'nerd' perhaps you might watch some of these discussions of craft. And personally, I found Goldblum mesmerizing in the role.
