When I first moved to NY, June Havoc was playing in Annie, but that was unbeknownst to me, I didn't know who she was nor did I have any desire to see that show. What a coincidence for me that you bring her up. I saw a great interview on YouTube with Dinah Shore who referred to June's aforementioned memoirs, that piqued my interest in the true story of Gypsy Rose Lee, June and her mother. With the recent revival of Gypsy and TCM showing the movie, They Shoot Horses Don't They, I took the plunge and acquired both aforementioned memoirs. I'm almost finished with the second. OMG, what a harrowing and dark, dark story she tells. Her survival, I believe, is due in part of her not being aware just how many challenges she was up against. Her determination was of a present state of mind, she just did, she didn't think about it, and there's something to be said for that. Despite all of the odds, she thrived, the work deserved all of the integrity she gave of herself, as well as raised a daughter. She wasn't a publicity whore or someone out to promote themselves, otherwise, she probably would've been more famous. IMHO.
