It's not exactly the same thing. However, Guys and Dolls borrows elements from films like the 1933 Lady for a Day and the 1942 The Big Street, both of which are based on Damon Runyon short stories. Big time gambler Dave the Dude in Lady for a Day can easily be seen as an early incarnation of Sky Masterson. For example, Dave's associates in the movie are referred to as "Dave's guys". Likewise, Missouri Martin, who has a lot in common with Miss Adelaide, runs a nightclub. Her female employees are called "Missouri's dolls".

There is a character named Nicely Nicely Johnson in The Big Street. Also, Sam Levene plays a gambler named Horsethief, who various sources have said was a precursor to his stage performance as Nathan Detroit.

Take Me Along is considered to be a musical version of O'Neill's Ah, Wilderness!, but it's really more closely based on the 1935 film version, which made Wallace Beery as Sid the above-the-title lead character over Nat and Richard Miller.
