According to John Lahr's biography, it was a difficult situation, with Dowling treating Jones as a glorified assistant. But -- and this is brought up in Kowalski -- when The Glass Menagerie's co-producer Louis J. Singer started pushing for a happy ending -- with, say, Laura, getting together with the Gentleman Caller -- it was Jones who stared Singer down, insisting that the ending be kept as Williams had written it. |
