"My Favorite Things" is not diegetic in the movie... real people don't sing to beat the storm, and they certainly don't sing a song that didn't previously exist and have it come out as a full properly written and constructed and rhyming song.

But that is EXACTLY what happens with Lonely Goatherd in the stage show. EXACTLY. Right down to the cue line, where Maria suggests that they can beat the storm by singing louder. (In the film, the only real substitution is the song itself - the situation is the same. The song is used, as a literal, diegetic song, to divert attention from the storm.)

Of course, this causes a problem in the film because Goatherd no longer has a connection to anything in the story, so they shoehorned in the marionette thing, which is fine on its own terms, but has nothing to do with anything really. But at least it's diegetic lol.

Please calm down, my friend. This isn't worth your angst.
