For the artists' sake I hope the film is a tremendous success, but I don't think anything will ever beat, for me, what happened on that stage all those years ago. I never knew so much could take place in the beautiful magic box of the proscenium. And I remember coming outside and thinking, I have to donate to Amnesty International.

The interweaving of the personal songs of the two leads and the fantasy world beyond (and within) was complex but never unclear; a tapestry, or one might say, a web, bedecked with riches at every turn.

A collaborated act of genius led, once again as so often in the best of the musical tradition, by the great Hal Prince.
