Not only is it not ‘opening’ yet, I believe it doesn’t have distribution. Indeed, one of the things that happens at Sundance is that the movies that play there are sold to various distributors who then enable the openings. And since it’s in January, this allows plenty of time to plan for an opening schedule that fits the movie, based on whatever else is opening, are they gunning for awards, etc.
Many “awards contender” films play at Sundance, get picked up, and then open in theatres later that year, before eventually getting nominated for Oscars, Independent Spirit Awards, etc. |
