Listen, he is a class act and seems like a wonderful guy... but is the bar so low that we would expect a director who's film he directed just got a BEST PICTURE nomination and a slew of other nominations would NOT be praising and celebrating the nominations of his collaborators who brought this film to life under his vision? While technically BP only goes to the director if they're a producer on it too, either way, a Best Picture nomination is a nomination for the director, without question. Because he didn't get one of the only five slots for Best Director (his movie got 1 of the TEN Best Picture slots, which means 4 others directors besides Chu were also not nominated while their films were)... he's going above and beyond the celebrate the noms his movie did get? Come on. And I am not just reacting to your post, i'm even more reacting to the guy who made the video commenting on Chu's video, Graeme O'Neil, who is talking as if anyone else would be sulking or something, keeping silent about the other nominees... grow up, Graeme. I get why you think the director of a massive thing like a huge movie musical fantasy has a bigger and harder job, ultimately that often doesn't even translate to what "best direction" of a film means to Oscars and cinephiles. You know who else steered a massive unwieldy ship, of an even harder creative task in theory because he was adapting and filming an "unfilmable novel", not a stage play with scenes and dialogue and structure already written in a script... Denis Villeneuve, who directed DUNE 2, a massively successful and popular film, a complicated visual feast, directed by a visionary director... i think a lot of people would consider this a bigger result of an even more necessary visionary at the helm, and to wide acclaim, and this is the second time he's pulled it off, and still no nomination. I have not yet seen Emilia Perez (every clip i've seen and review I've heard makes me ... not hopeful) or A Complete Unknown. It's possible and very likely that when I do I'll think that both should have been not nominated and Villeneuve and Chu should have been instead. |
