I believe the option to petition did not happen till much, much later.
For one thing, the rule that an actor had to be billed above the title to be considered for leading seems to have been introduced only in 1969. Prior to that, plenty of actors who were under the title were nominated in and won in leading categories.
In earlier times, there had been at least one example of an actor who was billed above the title being places in supporting or featured and then winning, and that was Charlie Ruggles for The Pleasure of His Company. The Tonys actually announced that they had decided to make an exception. It's not clear if the producers requested it. |
