The show's portrayal of "sexual liberation" is also a knife that cuts both ways. In any version, there's plenty of running around, although the real gay action didn't start until (well, the film), but onstage with the Sam Mendes version. But is it really sexual liberation? Isn't the nonstop party action at the Kit Kat Klub a metaphor for a society in collapse, the characters' self-absorption blinding them to the rise of Fascism? The attempt to make this show into a milestone for queer progressivism frankly baffles me. | |
