In this particular case, I think the producers held back way too many seats for VIP packages, which ended up being unsold. There are a LOT of seats in the front half of the orchestra that are unsold for this weekend, while the rest of the orchestra is basically sold out. The lottery is quite clever, because they can sell those tickets for a decent price, with the lottery winners thinking they got a steal, without having to circulate discount codes publicly.

On a side note, can someone shed some light as to why people buy concert VIP packages that don't involve a meet-and-greet? In this case, you get a separate entrance, a free drink, a VIP badge and lanyard, and an "exclusive" gift (which isn't named in the package description). Is that worth several hundred dollars? I know some Broadway theaters sell lounge access, but that's more like $50 or so and comes with a shorter bathroom and bar line, and a quieter space with seating at intermission. I wouldn't get the Broadway version personally, but I understand the appeal. Concert VIP packages that don't come with some kind of lounge are kind of a mystery to me, though. Are people buying them because they can't get the seats they want otherwise, or are they finding the package valuable in itself?
