The disappointing thing about this "reinvention" was that it wasn't reinvented enough. No where near the fantastic reconsideration of Daniel Fish's Oklahoma.

I sense that the performers in this Show/Boat would have preferred to be in a conventional production of Showboat. It was the conventional attempts here that ruined the show. There was no consistent vision of what to say that was compelling.

On the other hand, it wasn't a so-called reinvention seen in recent Broadway revival atrocities like the current Cabaret or the Hugh Jackman Music Man. This Show/Boat showed more respect for the source material than either one of those productions. Both Cabaret and the Hugh Jackman Music Man were rendered incomprehensible compared to the twists attempted at Show/Boat. At least in Show/Boat they were being honest.
