Saw her and Adam Lambert early in their run and was thoroughly impressed with both of them. I was not familiar with Auliʻi Cravalho before and aside from her excellent characterization (I think she nailed the blue, bruised, defiant and, yet, somehow charming qualities for Sally) and her very good English accent, I was relieved to see that, for whatever reason, the production allowed to to interject more musicality into her vocal performance than we've perhaps heard historically in this London/NY revival. Yes, there is still undeniably visceral anger in delivery of the title song, but she manages to balance the tone of this production with some beautiful musicality. I imagine (if I can be so audacious), that Kander has been pleased with her performance. |
