Universal reports that ''Wicked'' has earned $70 million (!) from its first week of digital release in the U.S. and Canada: $20 to rent, $30 to own.

Here's a Variety story worth revisiting: It's a deep dive into ''Wicked's'' score with Stephen Schwartz and his original arranger, Stephen Oremus.

Schwartz, who is Oscar shortlisted for his score with John Powell, documents the many changes that ''Wicked'' has undergone on the way to the big screen.

Schwartz also recalls how N.Y. critics dismissed ''Wicked,'' and even some San Francisco critics (during its tryout) called his songs ''unmemorable.''

However, the author of this Variety piece (below) gets one thing really wrong: ''Schwartz is renowned for winning six Tonys and three Oscars ...''

Uh, no. Schwartz has been Tony-nominated six times. And this article first ran at the end of 2024 and has yet to be corrected.

But I'd love to see the upcoming Tonys offer some sort of salute to Schwartz and his wonderfully ''Wicked'' success (and Broadway history).
