I think you hit the nail the nail on the head there, jeffef. You keep comparing these to Hamilton - yikes - but the vibe and tempo are not at all comparable imo. Caught Hamilton at The Public and was bowled over - completely. While I have little desire to see it again as I feel it would pale in comparison to that first viewing, I loved the OBC and am always thrilled to hear everyone's response to seeing it for the first time.

While I missed Water for Elephants and Notebook, I'm not sad about it. But I should probably point out that I became obsessed with Broadway in 1999 after seeing Rent so that might explain it...and that was after friends in college got me into JCS during my (JCrew) hippy days in college.

Will add that in recent years I've fallen in love with Sondheim and I'm not sure I would have cared so much for Company or Merrily until the last 5 years or so (certainly boosted by seeing Merrily in the spring).

This thread is like another "I loved Rock of Ages, but couldn't stand Next to Normal - what's up with box office success?!!?" haha
