I think a lot of regular New York theatregoers, the hardcore folks, hoped that the Gypsy production with Daly would be shot for television, as Sweeney Todd, Sunday in the Park With George, and Into the Woods had been, as well as plays like The House of Blue Leaves (although I wish they had gotten that one earlier in the run while Stockard Channing was Bunny) and A Walk in the Woods. Daly had won four Emmys for Cagney and Lacey, a CBS show, and she seems to have felt pretty betrayed when CBS did it with Midler. She was quoted saying "I feel like I’ve been punched in the face." You are probably right that it happened because Midler had long wanted to play Rose, and that CBS would not have done it with Daly, even though she was a very big television star for them, but I know that I and others had hoped for a live filming of the Broadway production. At the time, it seemed like a very reasonable thing to hope for. |
