Linda Lavin had been diagnosed with lung cancer and was receiving radiation treatment. Steve described the extent of the cancer's spread. On Dec. 29th Linda felt unwell so Steve started to drive her to the hospital. At some point Linda apparently began to suffer a heart attack. She told Steve she loved him and then lost consciousness. He pulled his car over, called 911, and tried to perform CPR on her. An ambulance arrived. The paramedics placed her on the sidewalk, administered CPR, but eventually put her on a machine. Steve wanted them to stop, but because he wasn't carrying the DNR, Linda was kept on the apparatus for the required period of time. Steve's telling of the event was heart rending, but his incredible love and devotion for Linda was a beautiful thing to hear. It is a brutal story. My mother went through a somewhat similar ordeal when my 89 year old father suffered a heart attack and lost consciousness. She rode with him in the ambulance to the hospital. She didn't want him on a machine, but because she wasn't carrying the DNR with her, the doctors kept him on it for the required period of time. |
