The movie is heavily revised, with a book that's more ring-a-ding-ding Sinatra than cynical John O'Hara. Its score consists of a few songs from Pal Joey interspersed with songs from several other Rodgers and Hart shows. The book changes Joey from a dancer to a singer, moves the action from Chicago to San Francisco and is in general a whole lot cleaner. It's fun on its own terms, but not very memorable.

The character of Vera becomes an ex-stripper and gets to sing Zip in addition to Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered. The latter number is interestingly shot, with Rita Hayworth at times posed to recall her pin-up photo from the 40s. Sinatra, in an act of surprising generosity for any star, insisted on her getting top billing out of respect for all Columbia Pictures owed her. She'd been their most bankable star for years.
