My God....what a generous gesture. It's easy to see what she saw in him. The relationship we have with artists who have touched us through their work is a tricky one and it's never trickier than at moments like this when we feel bereft at their loss and uncomprehending of what happened. Sharing details about peoples' passing isn't easy at any time and when you throw in dozens of media outlets who are all looking for a story to tell - most of them honestly and non-sensationally - then it must get a bit overwhelming. Hearing him tell the simple, straightforward story of her short illness and quick passing makes me feel very happy that she left with such grace and lack of pain and with expectation and hope intact. She was a witty, vivacious and warm performer and I'm very glad I got to grow up with her as a mother figure in the 1970's (for at least thirty minutes a week) and then be introduced to the greatest musical in Broadway history by her blazing and deeply felt performance in GYPSY and then to sporadic and brilliant performances for another 35 years. | |
