Oh, there is so much complexity to the performance, I am sure it can sustain multiple viewings. I was curious about what might have changed over the preview period.
That is very insightful re "Everything's Coming Up Roses." What I was feeling, particularly in the second act, is that Rose is fully aware of the consequences of her actions but she cannot stop herself. Her drive and ambition is the tragedy of the character, losing her everyone she loves. But it is also what has been keeping her alive, literally and spiritually. So it just kicks in and takes over, whatever the consequences. And then Louise breaks the cycle.
All of this was in the material before, of course, but Audra plays so many layers at once that you really come to understand why this is thought of as the "King Lear" for Broadway actresses.
With Jordan Tyson, the scene in Grantziger's office was incredible. You see precisely the moment when she decides to leave. |
