| Not quite true. Yes, Elton may not have been present in either city during TDWP previews but that doesn't mean he didn't do a fair amount of work in between. Yes, some songs remain from Chicago but they have been re-orchestrated and work much better. His score is only one of many elements that need to work. The book has been much improved, mainly by including key lines/scenes from the film, and direction/choreography is tighter. The show, overall, moves at quite a pace and has some wonderful moments. Fortunately, they dropped the friends scenes/songs which helps. But though it is now a much better show, it still isn't there just yet. UK hen parties will snap up tickets by the score but more sophisticated theatrgoers deserve something better. I found it enjoyable, but far from great. Elton was quoted recently that he wants Vanessa to bring her Miranda to Broadway and I hope that happens. She was marvelous and made the material better than it is. But another revision and a tryout in Toronto before heading to Broadway couldn't hurt. |
