One might hope that the Covid years - both the historic closure and then the precarious reopening with so many standbys and understudies fully utilized that first season of return - would give us a new perspective on the fragility of performance, the capricious nature of infection, its spread, its grip on human experience. I've learned to adjust my own rigid expectations. I don't want to see ill actors forced to push through. I never used to say that, and I recognize that "ill" has many meanings, from severe allergies that mar singing to a pandemic pathogen that makes sharing space toxic. But I trust the decision-making of those who have the shows' and their players' backs.
