Rodgers and Hammerstein felt that "community" was an important element of their shows and that the people who were "outside" of the community were the less likable characters and needed to be excised from the communty. Thus, Jud Fry in Oklahoma. And then in CAROUSEL, Billy Bigelow (who is not from Maine) and also Jigger Craigin. So probably R&H felt that the last image in Act One should be "the community" going off to the clambake, while Billy gets a knife to commit a robbery later in the evening. |
