The revival was a bit unnecessary, but it did give us a chance to see a lovely performance from Victoria Clark. Vanessa Hudgins was clearly not ready for Broadway prime time, but she still had a spirit that was pleasant to watch. The only moment I totally did not agree with was giving the song "Say a Prayer Tonight" to Clark, as it inadvertently made me focus on the profession Gigi was being trained for--I mean, say a prayer that she'll be a successful courtesan? Otherwise, by giving it to Mamita, it telegraphs the surprise, that Gaston, much to his own surprise, falls in love with Gigi. All that being said, I have spent many a worse evening in the theater than that night! And cheers to Madeleine Doherty for scoring the one big laugh of the night in that show. |
