Having seen Merman in Gypsy, I was excited to see Lansbury after reading of her triumph in London. Merman's Gypsy was the first show, though a teen who'd seen many shows, Gypsy was the first show that made me thing of my mother and family... Lansbury just blew me away. The US tour opened in Canada in Toronto at the Royal Alexandra (Royal Alex). For those of you who don't know it, the Alex is configured very similarly to the Shubert (3 levels about 1500 seats) but with much larger lobbies etc. It would fit in perfectly on 45th St. I saw it three times during its month long run. The beginning, my usual subscription, and the end. The first one was incredible. I was not expecting the bowing after Rose's Turn and it is still in my mind the definition of a coup de théâtre! Her performance was a high point with only her Lovett surpassing it. She was a the greatest actress of forever. No one has had her range. Mrs. Iselin to Mame to Rose to Lovett (and that's just mothers. There was nothing she could not do.
I saw her it again three more times, once again in T.O. at the very unBroadway-like barn then called the O'Keefe, 3,000 seats with all the charm of an indoor football field. Still great. I've seen all the Roses who opened Gypsy on Broadway. Audra I will see again as I really don't feel it fair to comment on an early preview as my definitive take. I will say, in the scene with the secretary, I could see that Rose did love her children. That was new.
