I really wanted the production to work without Scherzinger.

I've seen the current revival twice--its first preview on Broadway, and then shortly after its official opening. I went in very skeptical, but ultimately found myself enthralled. I suspected the thrilling experience had more to do with Lloyd's vision than Scherzinger's performance, which I especially wanted to be true after what is most easily referred to as "the Instagram debacle." So, I excitedly returned to the production to see Gonzales's Norma on Christmas Eve.

Gonazales acquits herself well with a vocally pristine performance and a surprisingly tender final monologue. Unfortunately, Lloyd's concept is so tied to contemporary celebrity, and Scherzinger's specific persona, that the production simply does not excite or provoke without her, particularly when Gonzales has to wear Scherzinger's choices. Ultimately, despite being such an idea-driven revival, this Sunset feels even more dependent on its star than the more straightforward storytelling that Trevor Nunn and Lonny Price offered.
