I agree that Michael Reidel's endless criticism of Bernadette hurt her in the Tony race. But I don't think we can say that it was "the wildfire of negative chatter that caused her to lose the Tony." First of all, her performance was pretty polarizing. Plenty of people who put no stock in what Reidel writes didn't like her interpretation of Rose. Second of all, and this is my more important point, there was a LOT of affection for Marissa's performance. She was delightful in Hairspray and people loved how good she/the show made them feel. People were still in need of post-9/11 feel good entertainment and Marissa personified it. Plus, Tony voters will often choose to anoint a new star over an established one. (I'm looking at you Maleah Joi Moon and Maryann Plunkett.) |
