On Broadway, Mazzie did the play "Enron" which didn't have the success it had in London; perhaps she did non-musicals outside of New York. Two of Audra's play wins are a little misleading in a way in that both "Master Class" and "Lady Day" both had a good deal of singing to make her stand out from her competition that her competitors couldn't compete with in a way by not having singing in their shows. The roles allowed her to show off a skill that was like extra credit that others couldn't qualify for. This is especially true in "Master Class', which besides the singing, isn't a very challenging role, unlike "Lady Day", which certainly is. Marin Mazzie, in addition to a lovely higher register in her voice, was a helluva belter, especially thrilling doing "I Hate Men" in "Kiss Me, Kate", yet able to handle the more legit higher register of "I Am Afraid That Women Are So Simple" and the other parts of the role. She'd have made a marvelous Rose in "Gypsy" too, but I count myself fortunate to have seen her in quite a few shows. |
