I really like the score for TWO GENTLEMEN, but i don't think I could come close to saying it's arguably better than their score for HAIR. Even just the range of what they wrote in Hair, the range of types of songs and emotion... Hair aims to do a lot more, and it does do a lot more, than Two Gentlemen, dramatically through the music (and lyrics), how the show is musicalized, and the journey it takes you on.

But I'm always glad to see love for Two Gentlemen, which is underrated despite it being a hit in 1971 and unfairly taking Best Musical and Book from FOLLIES.

Also it's still absolutely wild to remember that John McMartin wasn't nominated for Follies, Gene Nelson was nominated for Featured, even though both are leads, and both leads in Two Gentlemen were nominated as Leads. Phil Silvers won for a revival of Forum, but Barry Bostwick was nominated for Danny Zuko over McMartin as Ben Stone. Wild.
And almost harder to believe... none of the Follies featured actresses got nominated for Featured. Not Yvonne de Carlo, not any of them, but Bernadette was nominated in a role most don't even know she did let alone got a Tony nom for, as Hildy in an On the Town revival. And Ben Vereen was nominated for Featured as Judas in JCS even though Judas is not only *a* lead but I'd argue he's *the* lead (Jesus wasn't nominated). And Timothy Meyers as Kenickie managed a Featured nom (he only even has 1 song, Greased Lightening, which in the original Danny doesn't even have! Yet Barry managed a big nom for lead)... but none of the other featured guys from Follies or 2 Gents or Forum or On the Town or JCS or Ain't Supposed to Die... wow. Also wild to see that Yvonne Elliman didn't get in there as Mary M in JCS. (But Featured Actress was won by Linda Hopkins in Inner City, which got no other nominations)

What an interesting year at the Tonys.
