I don't think it's strange that people wouldn't want to be suddenly surprised by women unexpectedly lining up behind them when they're urinating. In American culture, many consider urinating to be a private matter, and we give each other physical space as much as possible. There's the old joke that you never take the urinal next to someone who's already urinating if there's an empty one farther away. And a lot of people have trouble urinating in public. Typically, in a men's restroom, the line for the stalls is at the sinks, NOT a continuous line in front of the urinals. When a stall opens up, then you cross the no-man's-land in front of the urinals to get to the stall. But I've noticed that women who enter the men's room don't know this convention, and they often line up starting right at the stalls at the back of the restroom, which means there is a long line of people, often chatting, very close to the urinals. Which wouldn't necessarily bother me personally, but I understand why it would feel awkward for many guys at the urinals because they are essentially being watched urinating in a way that the women don't realize doesn't normally happen. Maybe people are just watching their backs, but I understand why it's awkward. Women can also be awkward about the sharing of the men's restroom. I've had several occasions where once the women enter, they want the men to stop using the urinals, which seems a bit much. And I even had one circumstance where women blocked any man from entering, even to use the stalls, until their friends finished using the stalls. Which was more than a bit much, but people are complicated about the bathroom. |
