I’ve always made a case for “You’ll Never Know,” an early rumination on loss, emotional irresolution in divorce, and a rarity in a family holiday show, bitterness. The song evokes such rue, and feels utterly contemporary, and thus in tone, ahead of its time. The last phrase, its melodic line ravishingly nailed by Paige (reminiscent of Swenson’s “Old Maid”) to me promises a more complex show. |
