BABE is the trillionth play of its kind …

… and I swear they are killing the American theatre.

Terrible material; just the kind of middling, predictable, subject matter already a cliché of itself, characters who are mouthpieces for broad stereotypes of people we see in these plays again and again and again. You’ve already seen this play somewhere else, and I’m sure you fell asleep then.

Bad performances. Direction and design that does nothing to enliven the bad writing. Seats are comped because, despite the fame or notoriety of whoever the director or producer had in their phone book, a production that lacks any semblance of a real pulse is DOA. Another exciting NYC debut that will most likely never be performed again.

When will the status quo change? Or will the nonprofit sphere — dwindling as it is — just die a long death of a thousand paper cuts?
