The West End is mainly long runners including some which have been seen or about to be seen in NYC. But there's lot of decent stuff in the smaller off west end theatres/subsidised venues - and the prices will be much cheaper than Broadway! As mentioned elsewhere Ballet Shoes at the National has been very well received and is running until February. There's also a new production of the Importance of Being Earnest at the National which has had mixed reviews, but tickets are pretty hard to come by (they do an online Friday Rush scheme - though it really is a lottery how far in the queue you are). At the Almeida (the original venue for both Tammy Faye and the Paul Mescal Streetcar) Rebecca Frecknell is directing a production of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof which is just begun previews. It's completely sold out but they are putting on sale another batch of tickets on Wed 11 Dec at 12pm - UK time. Simon Russell Beale is heading the cast of a revival of Tom Stoppard's The Invention of Love at Hampstead Theatre - again there's limited ticket availability. In the West End - Rob Icke's hugely acclaimed production of Oedipus starring Lesley Manville and Mark Strong is ending its run. There are very limited tickets available - and the prices are crazily high (though maybe not by NY standards). The RSC's production of A Midsummer Night's Dream in on at the Barbican until 18 January - and the RSC is also transferring a new play 'Kyoto' from Stratford to Soho Place (a relatively new west end venue) from 9 January. At the delightful candlelit Sam Wanamaker Theatre at the Globe there's a production of All's Well That Ends Well until 4 January (it's had pretty good reviews) and the Cymbeline from 10 January. The seats at the Wanamaker are not very comfortable (wooden benches), but it's a pretty unique experience. Should Samuel Beckett float your boat Ben Whishaw is in Waiting for Godot at the Haymarket theatre until 21 December but it's a pretty workmanlike production. Even though Dec/Jan isn't the best time for theatre in London (too many pantos/christmas shows at producing houses) there's still a fair selection to choose from. |
