With the Michael John LaChuisa Wild Party rescheduled, it will be interesting to see if they cast Queenie as mixed race or Black, which was George C. Wolfe's original plan until Vanessa Williams dropped out. (They sure had bad luck in casing their leads. Ricky Martin was supposed to be Black, and then performed La Vida Loca live at the VMAs or Grammys and exploded.) Hello Again is probably LaChuisa's best show, but would be better for off-center than the Encores! mainstage. It's too intimate. I would love to see the actress's section revised to incorporate "Beyond the Moon" from the film adaptation rather than the silent movie sequence or the song used in the Transport Group's revival with Rachael Bay Jones. Joy Woods is a rather brilliant idea, though I don't know if anything she's done has shown us that she has the high notes for Marie. Emilie Kouatchou certainly does and could act it brilliantly, though I'm not sure if she can belt where the score requires it. If it was only an Encores! run, I wonder if Audra would sign on to play Marie's mother. If not, her Marie alternate and Carousel tour counterpart, Sherry D. Boone, would be great. |
