New York, NY (12/9/24) – Eric Krebs Theatrical Management will present the Off-Broadway premiere of BREAKIN' NYC, a journey through the Heart/beat of Hip-Hop – from the streets of the Bronx to a global phenomenon! Performances of this strictly limited engagement (through December 30) will begin on Saturday afternoon, December 14 at 4:00pm at off-Broadway's Theater555 (555 West 42nd Street).

Experience the pulse of Hip Hop culture like never before in this electrifying off-Broadway show. BREAKIN' NYC takes you on a high-energy journey through the culture of Hip-Hop and Street Style dancers — featuring Breaking, Lite Feet, Popping, Locking, House, Step, and more— all brought to life by eleven dynamic performers. An MC guides the story of Hip-Hop's rise from the "Boogie Down Bronx" to a global movement, while a DJ keeps the beats thumping and the audience bumping in their seats for a 75-minute, high-octane performance.

Directed and choreographed by Angel Kaba, the 11-member cast of dancers is Jihad Aly, Jonathan Amable, Maati Angaza, Aaliyah Berry, Mario Burton, Nadara Coplin, Alex Gossen, Kayla Muchotrigo, Cassandra Toussaint, Dalvin Vilsaint and Shannon Yu. Jacy Campbell is DJ. Cecily Lyn is the Emcee.

The creative team is Joan Racho-Jansen (lighting design), Cassandra Toussaint (costume design), Andy Evan Cohen (sound design), Jan Bentley (video), and Heather Olmstead (production stage manager). Elodie Dufroux is Assistant Choreographer.

BREAKIN' NYC consultants are Val "Ms Vee" Ho, Cebo Terry Carr, Richard "MC Gee Vee" Usher|Partners in Kryme Productions, Celine Edmondson and Manny Chacón.

Bios

Angel Kaba (Director/Choreographer) is an internationally acclaimed choreographer, artistic director, and cultural ambassador whose career spans continents and genres. Born in Belgium and raised in France, Angel discovered her love for the community and empowerment found in Hip-Hop and African social dances, which transcend language. Her early achievements include founding Contre-Tendance, a performance company dedicated to training artists and creating opportunities for self-expression on stage. In 2006, Kaba directed her first musical, Elya's Dream, setting the stage for her future as a visionary leader in the arts. Angel's previous collaborations include global artists like Rihanna, Kanye West, Burna Boy, and Salif Keita, as well as performances for iconic brands such as Coca-Cola, Nutella, and Levi Strauss & Co. Now based in New York, Angel Kaba is making history as the first African/Caribbean woman to both direct and choreograph an Off-Broadway dance production with BREAKIN' NYC. Her work is a testament to her commitment to elevating hip-hop and street dance styles, amplifying the voices and cultures that have shaped these art forms. As an educator at renowned studios like Broadway Dance Center, Alvin Ailey Extension, and Steps on Broadway, Angel inspires the next generation of dancers to honor the roots of the movement while mastering their craft. With BREAKIN'NYC, she is creating a groundbreaking movement that not only celebrates hip-hop's authenticity but also opens the door to professional opportunities for street-style dancers, paving the way for future generations to thrive.

Eric Krebs (Producer) whose theatrical career spans more than 50 years, has worked as a producer, a theater founder and operator, a college professor and occasionally as a performer. In 1974 he founded the George Street Playhouse regional theater in New Brunswick, New Jersey, now in its 50th year. He built and operated Off-Broadway's John Houseman Theater Center and Douglas Fairbanks Theater for over 20 years. Most recently he renovated and became the operator of a 160-seat Off-Broadway Theater, reopening it as Theater555, 555 West 42 Street in New York City. Off-Broadway he has produced more than 50 plays and musicals. On Broadway he produced: Bill Maher: Victory Begins At Home (Tony nomination for Best Special Theatrical Event), Neil Simon's The Dinner Party, It Ain't Nothin' But The Blues (nominated for 4 Tony Awards including Best Musical) and Electra (nominated for 3 Tony Awards). In April 2007, he performed his own 90-minute adaptation of King Lear, a one person presentation entitled Considering Lear. In the fall of 2016, he performed My Father's Voice, a solo presentation of his father's letters from the Ellis Island Prison and the War in the Pacific, 1938-1945. Mr. Krebs recently retired after 50 years as a professor of theater arts at Baruch College, City University of NewYork, where he continued a career as an educator that began in 1969 at Rutgers University (37 years) in New Jersey, where he is professor emeritus.
