Running lines with her (she played the Thelma Ritter role) I was hyperventilating. I recently re-read the play, didn't break a smile. I read someplace the cast split a gut during the first table read, then as they continued to rehearse, they were laughing less and less till by the time it opened it was funny as a crutch. Kirkwood had many complaints about Nancy Walker as a director. |
