| I saw this earlier this week and concur that it's pretty as a picture with some talented people but really lacking in energy and excitement. The highlight was Ali Ewoldt's "O Holy Night" sung with beautiful tone and pure and strong high notes. Howard McGillin's voice, perhaps from too much Phantom, now sounds rather ghost-like, which in a manner of "A Christmas Carol" kind of works. I saw him in "Phantom" years ago and while his top notes were wonderful, his middle and near the break in his voice always sounded rather hooty in a weird way (ok, unique). He doesn't sing very high here though, which is a shame as that was the best part of his voice, but he still has presence. The other singers were personable and talented, yet director Charlotte Moore's own songs and most of the other songs chosen just aren't sufficient showpieces to really give this group of singers places to stand out in performance. The actor playing Dylan Thomas was charming, the mother had a lovely voice, the aunt had some funny moments, and the father hadn't been given enough to do really. The show is nice and comforting; some folks told me they had seen it before in a previous year, so it clearly has some appeal. | |
