I agree that it seems a terrible idea. Prince wrote in Contradictions that his instincts were against it. And as mentioned earlier, in the Dramatists Guild discussion, Kander said that Prince agreed to try it "for some reason I will never understand," so Kander may have thought it was a terrible idea before they tried it. In Contradictions, Prince said that he had learned from Abbott and Robbins when working on The Pajama Game that “you can do almost anything drastic when the show is cut, there are no more lines to learn, and the performances are secure.” What happened on Pajama Game was that Robbins had always wanted “7 1/2 Cents” to open the show. Abbott resisted but agreed to try it at a New York preview just before opening. (There were only two New York previews, typical in those days.) According to Prince, “The number, which had been affectionately humorous at the end of the show, was serious business in front. It scared the hell out of Abbott, and he refused to try it for a second performance.” |
