Alan, everything you write is always so interesting and well researched. I think this might interest you. As Joe Masteroff's Executor, I am very closely connect to Cabaret. As a gift, he gave me his copy of the score and many preliminary notes and unused lyrics. In a letter from Hal dated July 15, 1966, Hal suggested opening Act III with "I Don't Care Much." Clearly that didn't happen. In a later rundown of the songs (undated), "I Don't Care Much" appears later in Act III two scenes before "Cabaret" which was then called "Come to the Cabaret."

Also of interest regarding Liza. They started working on Cabaret the day after Flora opened. John and Fred were both very high on her playing Sally. Ultimately, as we all know, that idea was rejected. According to Joe, the problem was that she was too American and it would have meant re-writing the show to reflect her "Americanism." Obviously, this was pretty late in the casting process, and Jill Haworth was cast just a week before they went into rehearsals.
