That was even greater than I imagined it could be. The contributions from Sara Bareilles, Celia Keenan-Bolger, Caissey Levy & Will Swenson painted such a wonderfully personal, poignant picture of what a FORCE OF NATURE Gavin was -- I join everyone who filled the St. James (and a spillover theatre) and the thousands watching online to affirm that human beings like Gavin are tremendously rare, and we're so lucky to have known him. I've attached a link to the PDF of the program that they published online. Joshua Henry was joined by Phillipa Soo, Shoshana Bean & Ryan Vasquez for a medley of "Children Will Listen" and "Neverland," which Mr. Henry said were two of Gavin's favorite songs. Other performances featured the Broadway Inspirational Voices (which Gavin sang with for 20+ years), and several pieces from his recent original song cycle / theatre piece WALK ON THROUGH. One substitution: Audra McDonald didn't perform; Kelli O'Hara appeared instead and sang Adam Guettel's "How Glory Goes." Other speakers included Gavin's family, longtime family friends, his recent partner, and his dear friend and voice teacher from his days at the University of Michigan. Not long ago, Kristin Chenoweth appeared on the Kelly Clarkson show and movingly shared one of the last things Gavin had said to her after his diagnosis -- "I had a good run." The service ended with a vocal performance -- seemingly recorded during the run of HAIR -- of Gavin's vocals on "Let the Sunshine In," seamlessly leading into a reunion of the Broadway cast who sang the show's finale live. Gavin once said in an interview that his dream of heaven would be to reunite, forever, with that cast, and perform that show again. - GMB |
