I fully agree with you. I think Godspell should have stayed off-broadway (it's almost more embarrassing for a big hit like that to move to broadway if it's then going to lose every major award), but awards aside it really doesn't work in a big theater.
And every revival and re-arrangement is over done. I can't bare to listen to anything but the original cast album, because of the arrangements and orchestrations but also because of the color of the voices and style of singing. It's very much of its time and style, beautifully so... changing that has never done much good for this particular score. |
