The family in familiar. CULT OF LOVE is a dysfunctional family play set during Christmas so it’s hackneyed and schematic from the start. Nonetheless, the cast is very good, and it’s enjoyable seeing these actors respond to each other so deftly. The play is mostly engaging though it meanders toward the end as its purpose gets murkier and its seams start to fray. Given this particular collection of assembled adult children —a near minister, an addict, a lesbian and a psychotic—CULT OF LOVE should be funnier than it is. Also, a less obviously hostile attitude toward Christian mores would have made it more interesting (see HEROES OF THE FOURTH TURNING) as well. But CULT OF LOVE doesn’t really strive to be challenging. It’s the theatrical equivalent of comfort food; you know what you’re getting because you’ve had it before. |
