The jury might be out but the people who own the rights (and that includes universal) played it safe in this case. Also, in the case of wicked, international productions kept rolling through the years, so the global recognition of the IP just got wider. For a show that’s probably gonna run anywhere from 25 to 40 years (give or take,) this is a good timing. Business will pick up in the next few years thanks to the movie( and may end up extending the run in a few years.
I don’t really know if sitting on the movie was a strategic decision or if the movie was caught in some development hell, but, if it was a strategy, I think they nailed it. |
