I really think it was because I was born when I was and how I grew up. I understood the humor and pointlessness of things. School air raid drills made no sense to me. Living as I did in a NYC suburb, I thought taking cover etc., was a joke, an absurd joke. As if... I saw the photos of Hiroshima. Not only did I enjoy Godot, I laughed a lot. And Lahr, the cowardly lion, was heartbreaking and funny. I know he is fondly remembered but for my money he was one of the greatest of all times.
I think ideas are in the atmosphere in some sense and when you're new to the 'room' you are better able to get the new whiff.
