At the beginning of the movie, Elphaba is dead from “melting” due to Dorothy so that she can get the witches broom to give to the Wizard. So, notice in the movie that Dorothy is carrying the broom. And yes, she is with Fiyero (Scarecrow), Boq (Tin Man), and the lion cub (Cowardly Lion). So it’s not a flash forward. The rest of the movie is a flash back.
